Behind the Scenes at HMH

Willy shows off some of our KAYA Health Oil!

Have you ever wondered what it is like to work at a dispensary? Well, here is a peek into the everyday lives of our receptionists, cannabis consultants and managers! Contrary to popular belief, this job isn’t all just fun. We are responsible for creating an environment that is simultaneously safe, welcoming and educational. It takes time and effort to make HMH what it is today, but were a proud to be part of it.

8:00 a.m.: Opening process begins! First, our managers arrive. They will start organizing the morning meeting for when the rest of the team arrives.

8:30 a.m.: Our first HMH openers arrive. The morning shift is from 8:30 to 3:30 – so they bring that first burst of energy that is much-needed right at the beginning of the day. Usually, the first duty is to start cleaning — wiping down and disinfecting counters, Windexing the display cases and fridge, cleaning the front windows. Sweeping and mopping – the whole nine yards. Next, they’ll bring out the best part, the flower! They will make sure all the jars are freshly stocked, that the flower is at that perfect level of moisture and each station has enough for the day. We’ll update menus to reflect anything that is sold out.

9:30 a.m.: The morning meeting is a time for everyone to touch base. We’ll often ask how everyone is feeling, voice any concerns and go over any specials or sales for the day. Managers will announce the $10 gram for the day.  We usually end the meeting with a quote, which sets the tone for the day.

10:00 a.m.: Time to open. Chances are, there are a few patients waiting outside. They will be the first in line. Our Receptionists will be ready up front to get everyone checked in and create a welcoming environment in the front lobby.

10:00 a.m.- 6:59 p.m.: Throughout the day, there are multiple responsibilities to keep track of. First and foremost is ensuring each and every patient has a positive experience on our sales floor. This means treating each person who walks through our door with respect and compassion. To be honest, this can be exhausting – but making someone’s day makes it all worth it. We love offering suggestions to patients, building valuable relationships with them and providing education. There is so much to learn about cannabis. If it is a slower day, you can bet we are educating ourselves about the latest studies, what cannabinoids are good for what conditions, and how to better help our patients. Other responsibilities include keeping the sales floor and lobby clean and organized, stocking flower and other medicated products, answering phone calls and receiving wholesale orders. We also must ensure each sale is legal and follows the correct procedure. Our staff includes talented graphic designers, organizers, leaders and salespeople. We see the diversity of skills and backgrounds as a strength; we all work as a team to help HMH run smoothly.

7:00 p.m.: Closing time! We’ll make sure to help any patients who are in our dispensary before we lock the door. The end of the night means safely putting away flower and other medicated product, cleaning up our workstations, counting our drawers and making sure the lights are turned off at the end of the night.

At first glance, working at a dispensary might seem like any other retail job. But what sets this job apart is the dedication given to each of our customers — we see our patients as more than just potential sales. We hope this intention shows through when you’re at our shop. Thank you for being part of our HMH family and we hope to see you soon. 🙂
